WINE CLUB EXCLUSIVE
Our Small Lot Collection wines are the result of years of experience tasting the mosaic of different and distinct individual blocks on our Bell Mountain Estate ranch. As we cull through and taste each lot, specific micro blocks speak to us. These limited offerings are handcrafted with our 100% estate-grown organic grapes that benefit from our sustainable farming approach.
We originally planted a tiny amount of Syrah (less than half of an acre) to add an extra dimension to our Estate Red. When we harvested our first vintage in 2014, we were amazed by the layers of complexity and varietal flavors that this block offered, so we decided to bottle it separately even though the production is miniscule. The name Bywater is a reference to Chris James’ and Ames Morison’s favorite neighborhood in New Orleans, often called the “Silver of the River” – where a natural levee exists. The Syrah block on our Ranch is planted next to a pond further linking the two.
Our second release, the 2015 Bywater showcases bright blueberry and ripe red cherry aroma with notes of black licorice, camphor, and a hint of tar that we find especially appealing, as it reminds us of some of our favorite Syrahs from the Northern Rhône. On the palate the wine offers a sweet, round impression, followed by a sensation of white pepper, before resolving into a long smooth finish.
Cool, overcast conditions in May influenced the vines to set less fruit than normal. Fortunately the temperature rebounded and gave us one our warmest years on record, but without the excessive temperature spikes we often see during warmer vintages. We also harvested earlier than in previous vintages. The result of these conditions was a lighter than expected crop but with more intense aromatics and increased concentration, and generally lower alcohol.
