The 2014 Kate’s and B’s offers primary aromas of blackberry, black currant, and raspberry,with supporting notes of cinnamon and orange peel. On the palate, the wine is concentrated and dense, with soft but firm tannins.

As we taste each individual lot of wine from the myriad of distinct blocks on our Bell Mountain Estate ranch, we discover that certain parts of the vineyard are best as components for small production blends. These micro blocks are identified and, over time and experimentation,they become part of our Small Lot Collection. Thesewines are 100% estate-grown, organic,and limited in their release.
Kate’s and B’s is named after Founder Chris James’ wife, Bradley, and Winemaker Ames Morison’s wife, Kate. The blocks where the fruit is sourced are reflective of classic Bordeaux territory – high-density vine spacing, gravely clay soils, tiny yields of small inky-blackberries, and a thoughtful clonal selection matched by a rigorous farming regime.
The judicious use of oak from our favorite coopers provides spice, cocoa and a rich toasty-ness to the wine, while still respecting the fruit. The overall sensation is one of seamless elegance.
Sunshine was the dominant theme for vintage 2014 with little rain throughout the growing season. Warm temperatures in late winter caused an early budbreak. Perfect weather in May (no wind or rain, plenty of sun) created ideal conditions for consistent bloom,veraison and ripening, which is what we hope for every year. A bit of rain in September suspended harvest momentarily and gave our grapes the extra time they needed on the vine to ripen fully. Harvest flew by and was completed on October 21st. Gorgeous color, concentrated flavors, and a nice range of acidity are the hallmarks for this excellent vintage.
