September 22nd, 2006 - New Arrivals
I’d like to take this opportunity to announce the newest member of our winemaking team: Jasper Gregory James, 7lbs, 0oz. What he lacks in experience, Jasper more than makes up for in enthusiasm. He’s all heart. Congratulations to Chris and Bradley.
Another star is born: Medlock Ames 2004 Chardonnay. The Wine Enthusiast just published a story about the Alexander Valley and included us in their New Faces section. We’re pleased to get the publicity, but we’re a bit conflicted. They gave us a high score on our recently sold out 2004 Chardonnay, which has caused a crisis of conscious for us. We have made a decision to avoid seeking scores for our wine, as we feel that our story is much more compelling than a score, and we don’t ever want to rely on points. It just seems so unimaginative. But as a winemaker I have to admit that I am glad that the quality of our vineyards and our hard work have been recognized, and despite my exterior nonchalance, I’m secretly proud of our score! Feel free to make up your own mind by reading the news yourself here.
We launched our harvest last week (hence the busy image of us pressing white grapes) with the first pick of a new variety for us – Sauvignon Blanc. We picked a tiny amount of this delicious grape which is currently fermenting as slowly and coldly as possible to preserve its delicate flavors. I’ve been looking forward to making this wine for a long time, and am excited about how the must (soon to be wine) is tasting. It is so clearly a Sauvignon blanc, with tangy grapefruit and lime aromas, with a hint of fresh cut hay. We’ll probably release this wine in April. I can’t wait!
