Slow Food
One of the recurring Medlock Ames themes is that we like to make wine that can be enjoyed with food. In fact, good wine should make you crave an edible pairing. Our love of the edible and the imbibable is no secret and the two things seem to have come together rather nicely in the shape of Slow Food Nation. During Labor Day weekend, thousands of Slow Food believers will descend upon San Francisco to celebrate all that is good, clean and fair about our country's food and drink. We were lucky enough to be able to act as the main sponsor for the Wine Pavilion which will operate at Fort Mason on Saturday August 30th and Sunday August 31st. Around 500 wines from throughout the country will be represented at the sustainable enoteca and we'll be on hand to talk about our methods and how our good, clean and fair farming creates a better quality product. We're incredibly excited about this event which is the first of its kind in the US.
Slow food is an organization dedicated to bringing about a broader understanding of the benefits of supporting food systems (and that includes wine!) based on quality, taste and sustainability. They actively encourage people to seek out regional traditions, regenerative and forward thinking farming practices as well as more support for local producers. We obviously believe in these ideals and do our best to live up to them at the vineyard.
In the end though, it all comes down to quality. We farm the way we do (sustainably and organically) because it produces a better quality product. Not everyone has the opportunity to appreciate the quality difference in organically raised wine grapes but I challenge anyone not to enjoy a freshly picked strawberry, tomato or pepper from our gardens. Farmed using the same philosophy as we employ in the vineyard, the enjoyment we get from growing our own produce is unparalleled. We're definitely believers in the power of a 'slower' agricultural pace for the simple reason that it tastes better!
