Hot summer days and cool nights are ideal for growing Merlot. At Medlock
Ames, we are lucky to have both. One of the defining characteristics of the
Alexander Valley appellation is the cooling influence of the Russian River. In
the evenings, a cool breeze begins to follow the Russian River up from its mouth
at Bodega Bay. This breeze brings with it a lingering fog that hangs around most
summer days until close to noon. The spike in temperature after the fog burns
off sends the vines into a frenzy of activity, pouring sugars and flavonoids
into the grapes. Then evening comes and the cooling begins. Without extended
hours of withering heat, the grapes' acidity remains intact. It's the perfect
recipe for deep, rich, ripe, red Merlots.
