Since the day Ames Morison and Chris James founded Medlock Ames, they shared a passion for exploring ways to bring out the best from Bell Mountain. In the vineyard and winery, Ames has tested and experimented for years and is proud of showcasing the spectrum of what Sauvignon Blanc can do both in stainless steel as well as barrel fermentation and aging.

The 2019 Newcomb Sauvignon Blanc offers a diverse array of complex aromas and flavors that beautifully showcase the interaction of our Bell Mountain fruit in contact with oak and acacia wood. On the nose we find primary aromas of intense, ripe peach, pear, lychee, and lemon custard with notes of green cardamom, mandarin peel, green fig, and honeysuckle. On the palate, we find that the skin contact, and barrel selection give the wine a rich mouthfeel not often found in Sauvignon Blanc. The lees contact provides a creamy, luscious character followed by racy acidity at the finish that cleanses the palate leaving you eager for the next sip.

What we’ve crafted is not a shy Sauvignon Blanc. We wanted to give it a name that represents its uniqueness and ambition to do something that stands out. Therefore, we named Newcomb for the Women’s College of Tulane University in New Orleans where founders Chris James and Ames Morison graduated from. This wine is a nod to class after class of intelligent women leaders who go on to be bold in their careers and lives.

Vintage

2019 offered nearly ideal growing conditions: a warm spring with some later rainfall set us up for good early season growth which was followed by a moderately warm and summer that lasted well into October without any severe temperatures of untimely rainfall. These conditions allowed for a classic vintage.
