Of Bell Mountain Vineyard’s 50 acres of vines, 50% are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, a testament to our passion for this grape. Our vineyard is situated in the southeast corner of Alexander Valley at the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountain Range giving us well-drained, gravelly-clay soil with a compacted layer of volcanic ash underneath. This location has the hot Alexander Valley summers combined with cool nights that is just what the Cabernet Sauvignon grape is looking for to maximize sugar, acid, and tannin development.
The 2022 Bell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon offers an aromatic and inviting nose, with bold notes of blackberry, blackcurrant, and pomegranate, complemented by a hint of tart cherry. Subtle rosemary and cinnamon add warmth and complexity. On the palate, the wine is smooth and structured. Flavors of tobacco leaf and fennel seed are balanced by a touch of graphite and medium chocolate, creating a harmonious mix of earthy and sweet notes. The tannins are big and silky, with great acidity that keeps the wine fresh and well-balanced. This Cabernet Sauvignon delivers a great combination of fruit, spice, and earthy flavors with a refined tannin structure. Pair with a grilled ribeye steak, rosemary-infused lamb, or a rich, dark chocolate dessert to complement the wine’s bold flavors and smooth tannins.
Vintage
The 2022 vintage hit records in so many ways. We had several rounds of severe frost including in areas where we normally don’t see frost. We had our latest frost on record during the middle of May which caused a significant crop loss. Nevertheless, we had high hopes for the vintage as we got closer to fall. During September we endured a record heat wave in which we had more than 8 days above 100 degrees with one day topping out at 119 degrees. Thankfully our canopies fared this weather well. 2022 is overdelivering on aromatic intensity, full flavor, and gentle tannins. Everything ripened a little earlier and we finished off the season with the smallest and earliest harvest on record, though we think perhaps some of the tastiest.
