2020 Burning Daylight Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc grows exceptionally well at Bell Mountain where we use two distinct rootstocks and clones to create variety and flavor in our wines. Grapes are harvested over a period of two weeks to allow grapes to ripen to different levels of acidity and sugar allowing for more flavors. The experimentation continues in the winery where the wine is placed into a mix of acacia and oak barrels after fermentation to impart additional flavors while allowing for a longer maturation period. All of these combined create an exceptionally aromatic, rich and balanced wine with an array of flavors bursting from the glass.
Previously known as Newcomb, Burning Daylight honors the commitment to hard work that is core to Medlock Ames. "Burning daylight" was one of Chris James' father's stock expressions. We use it whenever there is a lot of work to be done and not a lot of time to do it.
The 2020 Burning Daylight Sauvignon Blanc brings a fruit forward palate full of tangerine, lemoncello, passionfruit and white peach. Green spice, vanilla, jasmine tea along with orange and lime blossom spring from the glass. The barrel exposure highlights the lively mouthwatering acidity that cleanses the finish. The gentle impact from the once filled acacia and oak in combination with light lees stirring creates a soft textured and balanced wine with a lush, vibrant taste than lingers long after drinking.
Vintage
With half the average rainfall during the winter and spring, there was minimal vegetative growth. Cooler spring temperatures and a spurt of heavy rain during flowering led to a very light crop. The combination of these created concentration, depth, and substantial density in the fruit. Several short heat spikes and a smaller crop load created optimal conditions for early ripening. We were fortunate to pick everything early, escaping any smoke damage from the devastating wildfires throughout California.
